Summary:
Efforts to move towards a knowledge-based economy in Malaysia began many years ago. Initiatives such as MSC Malaysia, biotechnology and others were designed to utilise innovation and creativity in various sectors to increase Malaysia’s GDP, thus enhancing its global competitiveness.
Malaysia’s effort towards development of Innovation goes back to the early 70s when the government established the Ministry of Technology, Research and Local Government in 1973. With additional responsibility imposed as the lead agency for environmental matters, the ministry was then renamed to Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (MOSTE) in 1976 and the later to Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). The addition of the word innovation reflects the government’s deliberate intention to use innovation to move the economy up the value chain and to raise the country’s capacity for knowledge, creativity and innovation.
One of the key drivers identified to deliver economic prosperity in the globalised economy is innovation. Hence, late last year the government announced the New Innovation model which is expected to drive Malaysia’s innovation agenda.
Innovation is about unlocking the talents of the people and it must be introduced in all areas of business including public services. The Government therefore plays a critical role as it is a key enabler and driver of the many components of the Innovation economy.
